PRESENTATION

Florianopolis is the Capital of the State of Santa Catarina, and today is considered Brazilian’s Best Capital for Living (due its great Life Quality) the violence and poverty levels here are really reduced. The island’s first inhabitants were the People from the Azores Islands a group of Islands that belong to Portugal and its known for its fishing and agriculture. The population of Floripa (the nickname for the island) has also German and Italian in its origins.

Here we have 42 beaches and we have surf on at least 20 of them. Because of its varied coastline there’s almost always rideable surf somewhere. The best season for surfing is winter, from about Mid- April to Mid-November when consistent waves break with rare flat conditions or small days between swell upcoming.

There’s also good nightlife, with the womem population overcoming men’s by far. During summer the tourist invasion make traffic worse and acommodations full, the waves tend to be smaller even though it ‘s the place with best Surfing conditions in Brazil during this time of year (except from Fernando de Noronha, a small island further North).

Breaks 1 - 5

[1]Praia da Joaquina
Probably the best and most consistent wave in the Island. It is the capital of surfing in Southern Brazil, handles almost any swell, but the best conditions are E swell with NE wind or W wind. The famous left breaks from behind the Pedra da Careca, a small rock which stands close to the left side of the beach. On good days there’s some really long and powerful waves with several sessions. If you go further south down the beach there’s always good surfing spots with good lefts and rights. At these points the crowd factor and hassle are reduced. Locals surf on the left side more often. If you’re here in Florianopolis you HAVE TO surf at Joaquina.Opened during Mullet fishing season.

2] Praia Mole
This the “Fashion” beach nowadays, something Joaquina use to be years ago, the waves themselves are pretty good, with the left side producing good lefts during E,SE swells. On the right side there’s a spot called Canto do Gravatá which wakes up during big South Swells, big paddle, big waves. You can surf good lefts and rights all along the beach, during summer and on weekends a lot of girls. There are places there where you can eat and have some drinks looking at the ocean. The crowds are less agressive. Opened during Mullet fishing season. Close to Praia Mole, there’s another excellent spot called

[3] Praia da Galheta
You can go there by an easy trail close to the rocks on the left side of Praia Mole. The beach is pretty consistent ( as much as Joaquina ) with hollow waves both lefts and rights. Always less crowded than Praia Mole, the landscape is beatiful because the place is a preserved state beach. Don’t be surprise if you see some people naked at the place, you don’t have to take your clothes off to go there either. This place remains closed during Mullet Fishing Season.

[4] Praia do Moçambique
A 14 km beach all preserved with no buildings or commodities, a quiet , uncrowded place with powerful, tubular waves, both lefts and rights. Choose a peak and surf by yourself. The best swell is E,SE with light NE wind or W. If the wind is light S you can surf on a spot called Camping da Barra ( ask locals about ) with handle some waves with this kind of wind. The right side of Moçambique is called Barra da Lagoa, a place that works only with big swells, generally crowded with kids and longboarders.

[5] Praia do Santinho
Located north, close to Praia dos Ingleses, you can go there following the road that pass by Praia do Moçambique. It is a pretty consistent spot, with good waves and not many surfers. E swells and NE winds are the best. Waves pretty strong, Tom Carrol broke a few boards surfing there on a good day. It worths the drive.

Breaks 6 - 10

[6] Praia Brava
Located extremely north, holds best conditions with East swell and South wind, during summer gets full of argentinians tourists. Good spot for medium waves, tends to lose quality when bigger than 5 ‘. If you are close by check it out (it is located close to Praia dos Ingleses / Praia do Santinho Area).

[7] Praia do Forte
Works only with big E swells, a right peels light a point break. Holds up to 5 ‘ with E or S winds. Low tide is better. To get there go to Canasvieiras and then take left at the Ponta Grossa turn off. Ask locals if you have problems, there’s an ancient militar fortress close to the beach.

[8] Ponta das Canas
Ne Works only with big E swell, same conditions as Praia do Forte, but not as hollow, a right great for multiple maneuvers. Breaks near the rocks. To get there make local inquiry close to Canasvieiras.

[9] Lambe Lambe
Another spot which breaks with big E swells. It is a difficult place to find, so make local inquiry close to Ponta das Canas. It is located in a rock point somewhere in the coast. It is usually bigger than Ponta das Canas e Praia do Forte. Low tide is better.

[10] Praia do Campeche
The same beach as Joaquina, but further south. The Praia do Campeche itself it is located in front of the Campeche Island, the road leaves you directly there. When it is breaking that’s the place to be. Needs big or good size S swells and W wind. Works usually during the winter on the coldest days. Some surfers compare it to Jeffrey’s Bay. It is for sure one of the Brazil’s best wave. The wage is a right which creates long rides, with hollow sections. Awesome even to watch.
When it is breaking always crowded, but there’s always one for you. Strong riptides, creating long paddles. Close to this spot there’s another good one called Riozinho (Small Creek). It creates hollow , powerful waves, with barrels and barrels. It is located north from the Campeche main entrance, close to a small sports gymn. Ask locals. With S,SE swell hollow rigths, with E swell hollow lefts. Best winds W or really light NE.

Breaks 11 - 17

[11] Morro das Pedras
It is located at the end of Praia do Campeche. Go by the paved road and you can see the place directly from the road. Strong and tubular rigths breaking best with S swell, W or light S wind. Usually is kind of mushy, but sometimes it produces great waves.

[12] Praia da Armaçao
Next stop after the check at Morros das Pedras, just follow the road. Best at low tide, light NE wind or light S. Waves all over the beach, always uncrowded. Lefts and Rights.

[13] Praia do Matadeiro
Place where the ancient fishermen used to kill the whales that they fished. Excellent surfing spot, you have to drive until Praia da Armação and then cross the small river walking. Everybody knows the place. Good with S wind not too strong. Powerful waves, short rides. There’s always some crowd there. On big days the waves tend to break more at the middle of the beach, on smaller close to the rocks.

[14] Lagoinha do Leste
Some people claim it as the most consistent spot in Florianópolis, but only a few can check it out everyday. The place is all preserved, pretty landscape, hard trail though. There are two ways ( 2 trails ) to get there. One is parking your car at Praia do Pântano do Sul ( a fishermen’s beach ) and hike the trail (45min -1 hour walk ) Make local inquiry for the exact location of the trail. The other way ( 2-3 Hour walk ) is by the rocks through the Matadeiro Coastline. Don’t forget your shoes and go for it. It is always uncrowded ( except during weekends ), the waves are strong and it might be the most beatiful beach at the island. You can surf at both corners, the left corner is protected from N winds and the right corner from the S wind. During summer sometimes it is the only place with some surf on it.

[15] Praia dos Açores
Take right when you reach the Pântano do Sul beach, you’ll see the place at your left.
Usually uncrowded, it has its days, but usually the waves are all close outs. If you’re going on that direction, check it out.

[16] Praia da Solidão
Alternative surfing spot, produces good waves with S swell and N,W wind. Small beach with a good right. Follow the road from Praia dos Açores and make local inquiry to get exactly direction.

[17] Praia dos Naufragados
Another beach totally away from any crowd or tourists. Get the road to Ribeirão da Ilha ( turn right close to Morro das Pedras, ask locals ) and follow it to its end. From ther get the dirt road as faar as possible toward Ponta dos Naufragados, leave your car there ( better do not leave any valuables inside ) and get the trail, its a 30-40 min. Walk.
It worths the walk. Beatiful place, hollow waves at the right side , holds size and produces excellent barrels. At the left side there are good lefts breaking . Works best with S swell and W, NE wind. Never S wind.

Breaks outside Florianópolis

Outside Florianopolis the best places are; Guarda, Garopaba and Imbituba, there’s large variety of waves with excellent quality. In these places the waves are usually1-2 foot bigger than in Floripa. There’s no traffic, most of the inner roads are not paved, food is cheap and the water is a bit colder.
It is more like a Country side, you’ll see several farms and many fishermen and their families. English is not familiar to many of them, but they are pretty easy going and won’t mind carrying on a conversation in sign language, tending to be helpful with foreigners. It is more like a Country side, you’ll see several farms and many fishermen and their families. English is not familiar to many of them, but they are pretty easy going and won’t mind carrying on a conversation in sign language, tending to be helpful with foreigners.

Praia da Guarda

Go south in the BR 101 road and in 30-40 minutes you’ll be on this which is considered one of the ten best surf spots in Brazil. Take right on the Guarda do Embaú / Praia da Pinheira sign .There’s an awesome left that breaks on the rivermouth close to the rocks. To reach this peak you have to hike a small trail and paddle through the river. It worths the effort. The best surfing is on with offshore winds ( W ) or light NE and at low tide and on a E , SE swell. The wave is long and perfect peeling like a perfect left point. There’s also good lefts and rights in the middle of the beach that streches to Garopaba’s limits. During the mullet fishing season the option close by is Prainha a good beachbreak with lefts and rights. There’s food and other facilities on the main road to Guarda.

Praia de Ibiraquera

You can go there by the same road that goes to Rosa Beach turning right on the crossing where there’s a Gas Station, ask locals if you get lost. Another way to reach the place is going south of the Garopaba’s main entrance mantaining on the BR 101 and turning left on the Ibiraquera Park Sign.
This way will lead you to the other side of the Lagoa de Ibiraquera. Depending on the conditions you will have to cross this lagoon, which is pretty easy. The wave itself is a long , perfect left that breaks close to the island, there’s a channel right in front of the island. During big days it is the only way in. This left when is rolling has been compared to Uluwatu by experienced surfers. There’s also some good waves all over the beach , both lefts and rigths. The best swell is E, SE and the wind light NE or W. During strong NE winds sometimes you’ll have to share those waves with windsurfers.
During mullet season surfing is forbidden, some conflicts have been reported there due the heavy fishermen population that live there. Close by there’s a beach called Praia do Luz where you can surf if the wind is ligth S, it has pretty good waves and it is rarely crowded. There’s restaurants and other facilities close to the parking lot next to Pousada Ibiraquera Park.

Praia da Silveira

Turn right after the Mormaii Surf Shop in Garopaba City. The road is short but pretty stepy. Make your car move constantly if you want to make it through, sometimes when the road is too wet is almost impossible to make it. Look at other cars to see if it is possible to make it.
Once there you can park your car in the parking lot going straight down on the road or turn right on the first crossing. If you turn on this first crossing you have to leave your car next to a fence in front of a big lawn. Lock your car and go by that small trail that leads you to the right side of the beach. That’s the Real Silveira Wave.
Conditions can get pretty intense there. The wave is a rigth that breaks over rocky botton. The perfect conditions for this spot is S swell and S wind. It can get big, like 12-15 ‘ , being one of the biggest waves in Brazil. When it is like that you have to jump from the rocks to get outside, which sometimes is not easy. With that size this wave is only either for experienced or hardcore surfers. Conditions are much mellower from 4-6 feet making it a perfet wave with lots of sessions for maneuvers.
The parking lot wave is just a strong wave that gets good sometimes , and when the right corner is not working is the only option there. Food and facilities at Garopaba City. During mullet season sometimes the beach is opened, look for a flag close to the beach, if it is Red surfing is out if there’s no flag make sure asking locals if surfing is possible.

Praia do Rosa

Go through the main acess to Garopaba City and turn right on the sign that indicates the place. Go by the dust road until its end. You’ll see restaurants and some shops, that’s the Rosa Sul (Southern Rosa).
The conditions for this spot are S swell and S wind, the wave is usually not hollow and pretty long. During gigantic days the only way in is by the small rock entrance called “Portinho”. It is located on the rigth corner of the beach. If the wind is NE the Rosa Norte (Northern Ros) is the wave. You can even go there walking through the beach or parking your car in a Condo’s entrance that has a paved road (ask locals). This entrance is located right before Pousada Familia Agrifoglio. Sometimes it is closed . The wave at Rosa Norte is pretty good, with a good left close to the rocks and some good lefts and rights close by. A lot of girls during summer. During mullet season Rosa Norte is always “opened “while Rosa Sul sometimes is. Ask locals. From August to October whales come from South Pole to have their babies there.Close to the Rosa Norte there’s a spot named Praia Vermelha, a private beach where if you don’t have permission you can get there by a trail that goes through the coast of Rosa Norte. It is protect from South wind, works best with S swell, but you can surf with E,SE swell either. Holds quality up to 5 ‘.

Praia da Ferrugem

Turn right on the Praia da Ferrugem Sign when you’re almost arriving at Garopaba City by the main road (you can see the Mormaii factory really close by). The road will lead you directly to the beach where you are going to see many bars, restaurants and small markets.
During summer this is place pumps party and a lot of tourists. The night clubs close their doors by dawning, good place for Party Animals. The break itself is one of the most consistent breaks in Garopaba / Imbituba region. There’s always something rideable. The left corner produces good lefts with a channel that take you right on the peak. The best wind is NE, E and E,S,SE swells. The right corner is called by locals “Australinha “ (Tiny Australia), with light S wind and E,SE swell there’s a good right that peels like Kirra. Right after “Australinha” there’s a beach named Barra or Barrinha, a good beach break with lefts and rigths with good quality when the swell is no bigger than 6 feet. During mullet season Barra is always closed while Ferrugem Left Corner is always opened, ask locals to be sure.
