PRESENTATION
Philippines, Introduction -
Siargao is one of the 7000 islands constituting The Philippines. It is located between Samar and Mindanao, facing the great Pacific Ocean as well as the deepest ocean trough in the world (over 10,000 m!).
One might as well say that the continental shelf cannot slow down the swells' approach since it is practically non-existent. From July to October-November, it is South-West monsoon time, the dry season on this side of the archipelago. Winds are constantly offshore, days are very sunny and it is also the time when cyclones are forming above Guam and then moving up toward Taiwan.
They send powerful West-North-West swells onto Siargao. This island, which is placed along the edge of the cyclonic belt, is seldom hit by typhoons. The most renowned wave in Siargao is called Cloud 9, a rather intense right when the direction and size of the swell are combined.
In addition to this spot, there are hundreds of other waves of all levels that are accessible from beaches or, sometimes, by boat.

Home
Gerry and Susan Degan and Naoki Nakata met on a 1995 visit to Siargao Island and were instantly captivated by island's natural beauty, its people, and the perfect Cloud 9 surf. During a evening of conversation over local rum, the idea of abandoning city life and embracing an alternative surfing lifestyle on this remote Filipino island was born. After the trip, everyone went back to the real world.
Back at his job in Tokyo, Naoki could not stop thinking of that late-night conversation in Siargao. Refusing to let his dream slip away, Naoki headed back to Siargao, decided to risk it all, and placed a deposit a prime piece of land directly on Cloud 9.
Imagine Gerry's surprise when Naoki showed up on his Sydney doorstep ready to continue the plan hatched over drinks four months previously. After ten seconds of debate, Gerry and Susan quit their jobs, packed their bags, and heading to the Philippines.
From dream to reality, the process of building a resort in a developing nation provided eye-opening lessons is everything from cultural education to construction and everything in between. After four years of bouncing between the Philippines and their home countries, Sagan Resort was born.
During the last ten years, Sagana Resort has become an important part of the local community and surf culture. Gerry, Susan, and Naoki are proud to be involved and have a positive impact in their adopted home.
Gerry plays an important part in bringing international surf competitions to Siargao and Cloud 9. He is currently event coordinator of the Billabong Cloud 9 Invitation, an annual surfing event featuring the world's best barrel riders.
Sagana Resort continues to be a labor of love and a unique lifestyle. Susan, Naoki, and Gerry invite you to share in their dream.

Activities
Three-Islands boat trip
This is a half-day boat trip that encompasses three different and beautiful islands a few minutes from General Luna without having to go into the open ocean. First stop is Guyam Island, a leisurely five-minute ride from the General Luna pier. Guyam island is your classic uninhabited tropical island with a white sandy beach surrounding about an acre of coconut trees. This island was even featured on the cover of a previous issue of the Lonely Planet guidebook.
From Guyam you head to Daku Island, a much larger but equally as beautiful. Daku has a small town and covered picnic tables by the beach. There is a surf break out the front which is good for beginners and the island also has great snorkeling around the back so bring your goggles.
Another 5 minutes in the boat and you will land on Naked island. This island has no inhabitants or vegetation and you can easily swim around the whole island or walk around it looking for washed up shells.
Sohoton caves & lagoon
More a lagoon with an entrance through a cave than an actual cave, Sohoton is the area's premier day-trip destination. About a two-hour boat ride to this newly designated national park from General Luna will find you in a landscape that has to be seen to be believed. Striking limestone formations rise out of the glassy waters to create a maze in which only the experienced can find the way out.
Your guides will take you to caves and jumping rocks and finally to swim with the very rare non-stinging jelly fish. Sohoton is a must for all travelers to the area.
Magpaponko swimming hole
Situated near the town of Pilar about a 20 minute boat ride from Sagana Resort. It's a great place to spend a few hours in the sun and salt water. Magpaponko is only exposed at low tide and the waters are washed out and replaced daily by the incoming tide leaving it a beautiful and clean place to swim.
Other trips & activities
For the really motivated there are other day trips including the Twin Islands of Mamon and La Janosa, and the day trip to Caob a beautiful waterway accessed through the vast mangroves of the Del Carmen area on the western side of Siargao Island.
Siargao Island is only 10km from the Philippine Deep (the second deepest area on the planet) and during the right season the fishing here can be fantastic. Sagana Resort can organize for you to fish with Junior Gonzalez, the best on the island. Bring your gear or use Junior's and try your luck catching sailfish, wahoo, dorado and tuna. You catch it and we will cook it for you!
If you want to stay a little closer to the resort we have kayaks and surfboards for hire. We can arrange surfing lessons with experienced local surfers who speak fluent English and Tagalog. We can also organize motor bike rentals (bring your international license) or an air-conditioned van with a driver to take you around the island.
About Surfing
Best surf
Generally, the best months for surf in this area are August through to the beginning of November. This is when we get the most typhoon swells and the best winds. During Mai, June, and July, the surf is generally smaller. BUT when it's on the conditions are ideal. A bit of a gamble at this time of year though. From December to April the winds are often strong and cross shore, BUT the swell is always pretty big and some surfers prefer this time of year.
What to bring
when you depart for Sagana Resort there are several items you will need. These include booties, sunscreen, first aid kit, surfboard wax, etc. It is also important to have travel insurance. If you have any questions or require info please don’t hesitate to contact us
Cloud 9
Cloud 9 is situated directly in front of Sagana Resort, no boats needed. The wave is a classic right hander that can be both fun and challenging. Although it is a relatively short wave, the fact that it barrels nearly the whole way guarantees satisfaction.
Jacking Horse
A somewhat fickle right hander that can be really fun on its day. Dependent on swell direction, but when small is a great wave for beginners.
Tuason Left
Some consider this the best left on the island. Hollow and shallow and only good over 3 feet. Beginners need not apply
Rock Island (Tuesday Rock)
Long fun forgiving right hander about a 10-minute boat ride from Sagana Resort. When it is on, this wave is so much fun and as long as any on the island.
Stimpies
World-class left hander, also 10 minutes from Sagana Resort. This spot is EPIC! Big or Small Stimpies is what you picture when dreaming of perfect tropical surf.
Pacifico
Another wave for the goofy footers. 1 hour boat ride from Sagana Resort. Long workable left that Works on all tides.
Other waves
within a 2-hour boat ride there are approximately 10 world-class breaks, which are always uncrowded and well worth the trip. There are also a few well guarded secret spots that can be found if you look hard enough.
